Well, I'm back and I didn't take a darned picture the whole weekend. We had a lovely time, Friday was beautiful weather and we sat around an enormous campfire and visited with the friends we made at the last Burner event. We ate tacos and shared them with the neighborhood in general, and we watched some fire spinning and took a stroll up and down the campground.
Saturday, however, the other shoe dropped - it started raining before I woke up at 7 a.m., and it rained for twelve solid hours. We'd had the foresight to cover our firewood and put our chairs under my big Coleman shelter, and we camp out of waterproof Rubbermaid bins, so our stuff was dry. We secured a long tarp to the edge of the shelter, tied up the other end using ropes and nearby trees, and covered our firepit nicely. So we spent the day under the shelter and the tarp, nursing our fire and staying toasty (although a little smokey) and drinking hot beverages. Our fire attracted other burners, too, so we made friends with C.O.W. camp down the road, a few Wichita burners across the street, and Ionic and Ballzac who both bugged out early Saturday morning.
The rain stopped around 6, as the sun was going down, but not before it made a squelchy mess out of the road. But the burn must go on! and on it went. It was pretty laid back compared to the big regional burn I've been to a couple of times - less people, less organized art and activities - but still a very good time. And it's gotten us all excited and motivated for next year. Sunday was spent traveling home and cleaning up all the wet, muddy gear before we pack it away for the winter. Next weekend is our last campout of the season - we're yurt camping again, and after that the state park closes the shower houses.
Yesterday, for my thirtieth birthday, I stayed home and sniffled from the cold I've caught, apparently enhanced by sitting out in the cold and wet all weekend. Late at night, Stephanie and I ordered pizza and watched Sex in the City on DVD; all in all a pretty good day. Tonight I'm having a friend over for dinner and cocktails, and this weekend I've got both the girls coming. A rather busy week!
